Loving Your Community

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”

1 Corinthians 13:4

Tommy is an entrepreneur and the owner of a pizza shop in Phoenix. He lives in a town where the summer can be long and unrelenting.

Three months ago, a tragedy blew through the town that left many residents trapped in their homes. Tommy’s employees showed up to work on time with their usual cheerful attitudes.

When Tommy saw his employees were able and willing to work, he took to Facebook. He quickly updated his business page to tell residents that they could call or reach out to his pizza shop if they needed medications or other errands run.

He explained no purchase was necessary, that he simply wanted to help his community. He did this because he knew his town had many elderly residents and he worried they would become stranded or forgotten.

The above story illustrates an example of how some people view hardship as an opportunity to profit. But Tommy took the opposite approach. Instead of using the tragedy to gain, he used it as an opportunity to give. That’s the very definition of love.

What situation in your life could you use as a chance to give back and bless others? How can you show love and grace to the community around you?

A wonderful nonprofit organization that shows the true nature of giving back to a community is Hooah Deer Hunt for Heroes.

This program enables soldiers to network with other soldiers and civilians in the outdoors, which is a unique opportunity.

They say, "The outdoors are the perfect place to heal mentally and physically and enables their soldiers to experience the outdoors in ways they did not know was possible."

God, help me to be a giver. When others are takers, I want to keep on giving. Show me some tangible ways I can be a blessing to my community. Allow for me to see any difficulties in my path as blessings. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
